Google’s Big- So How Small are Others?

Google is often what we talk about when it comes to SEO. The Search Giant’s well known for a number of reasons, including helping your website be featured more distinctly and bring in more traffic. With around 6 billion searches everyday, Google does hold promise for website owners.

It is not just Google.com that we are talking about – but Google’s presence in each niche country. These localized versions of Google are extremely popular and today, 90% of the search engine market is of Google. While China still doesn’t rely on Google (most users there use Baidu, a Chinese search engine), the other few billions do.

The Changes when it comes to Google

What makes Google distinctly different from its competitors is the adv. When it comes to SEO, Bing, advanced algorithms it uses – in other words, it can be easier for you to fool other search engines than Google. With Google Semantic searches, Google is looking at the relevancy of content more than ever, when ranking search results.

Yahoo and other search engines have different SEO algorithms as compared to Google, but have a tide that’s common in them. For example, you will fetch nearly the same result by using meta tags and title tags in Yahoo! and Bing, but Google will take into account a number of other factors as well.

If you’re thinking to have a different SEO strategy for search engines except Google, here’s one word of advice – don’t. To put it intp analogy, here are few reasons you might need to consider:

  • Google’s the only major player in the market, with Yahoo! and Bing combined only having 75% of market share.
  • You are effectively not losing out by not having different SEO strategies for different search engines. This is because the basic principles of SEO still apply to other search engines – it’s only that Google looks for a whole lot more while other search engines are still where Google was in the 2000’s.
  • Bing is yet to develop the rich indexing capabilities of Google and by the look of it, will take a long time.
  • Some of the differences between how Google and Bing indexes pages are below:
  1. Google looks more at semantics, Bing looks solely at keywords.
  2. The backlink requirements, page size, content requirements and 301 & 302 requirements vary.
  3. Bing cannot understand a canonical URL as well as Google does – in other words, Google know what’s what while you can fool Bing more easily. Bing in fact, does not support the canonical tag.
  4. Bing can register a domain without looking at the ‘www.’ prefix.
  5. Bing, more often than not, only indexes the first 100k of a page, Google doesn’t mind indexing more – a reason you can see nearly the whole page when you try out the cache option.

More importantly, Google isn’t just a search engine out there – it’s a lot more. Here’s why the ambit of Google’s searching abilities are expanding and you need to invest heavily in Google.

YouTube: It is the world’s largest online service and alone has more than 500 million visitors per month. It is by itself bigger than Yahoo, Ask and Bing, all combined. Here are the statistics – more than 4 billion hours of video have been watched on YouTube till date.

Android: Launched on 17th of August 2005, at the cost of 50 million dollars Android is open source. With the latest Android Wear, you can find it everywhere, from fridges to cars. Consider this – in 2013 for instance, 260 million Smartphone were sold and out of this, 200 million Smart phones were running Android. Presently, smart phones have 17 percent of the web browser market, a percentage going to increase soon.

You have a host of other Google services to choose from – think Google maps, Gmail, and Google Plus. There is another other interesting step has Google has taken, the Project Loon. Today, two third of the world’s population is still not online – and Google is trying to change that. Google aim is to get balloon powered internet for everyone – and you can well imagine which search engine these people would prefer.

And it’s not just that Google has changed how we search things. The company has ventured into new arenas as well- something that can have a ripple effect.

Devising SEO strategies for Yahoo and Bing

It’s not to say that you do not need to devise a SEO strategy for other search engines – you just do not need to go in depth, like you’re going in for Google. Optimizing for Yahoo! and bing the smart way will save you time in the long run and good SEO strategies will work in most search engines, if not all. The Motorola Brand was revived with the Moto G and Moto X, both from Google’s stables at that point of time.

If you still are wondering how important Google’s to you, here’s another interesting statistic for you – since 2010, Google is acquiring more than one company in a week.

Bing and Yahoo partnered up some time back to take on Google jointly – but the only similarity that Yahoo has with Google now is that they both share their headquarters nearby in San Francisco. Unless you have an audience which is mostly based on Yahoo, Bing or another search engine, it might not be a great idea to invest hugely on other search engines –and no, not even the argument that most invest in Google leaving only a few to devise strategies for other search engines hold here.
